Health And Wellbeing Retreat With Ayurveda
What is Ayurveda
The human body has five elements called the Pancha Maha Bhoothas. These are Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether. These elements manifest in the body as your Dosha. The Doshas are Vatha, Pitha and Kapha. The principle is that the Doshas govern your biological, physiological and physio-pathological functions of the body, mind and spirit/consciousness.

The Somatheeram Ayurveda Resort
I was lucky to have experienced this ancient medicine first hand at the Somatheeram Ayurveda Resort. Located in the South of India, within the state of Kerala. The wellbeing retreat resort boasts an abundance of coconut palms, banana trees and of course, Ayurvedic herbs lining the many paths throughout. Each of the thatched cottages are idyllic and tranquil, with their own outside seating areas and hammock. So when you are not taking a meditation class, yoga session or enjoying one of the many traditional Ayurveda treatments you can soak up the atmosphere, read the daily newspaper or enjoy the breathtaking views of the beach (which can be accessed via the sister property Manaltheeram).
There are a number of treatments available from the general massage to programmes that include a number of treatments such as a slimming programme or Beauty Care Programme.
During my stay I enjoyed a general oil massage where the herbal oil is applied by hand to tone the body and improve blood circulation. The natural warm oils had a lovely aroma. It was a very relaxing experience. Afterwards, you are given a robe to wear while the body absorbs the oils. Then an hour after the treatment you can take a leisurely shower back at your cottage.
I also enjoyed the traditional Njavarakizhi treatment. Where natural herbs are bound in muslin bags and soaked in warm oils and massaged over the body. Not only is it relaxing, it is also a good exfoliant and good for joint pain, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and muscular problems. One not to be missed!
