Just like I’m desperate to visit the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague, or ‘Praha’ as the locals pronounce it, I’m also seriously envious of those who have had the privilege of visiting the stunning country that is Croatia. With a population of over 4 million people, this underrated country is situated in the Adriatic Sea, where there are more than a thousand islands. It’s definitely safe to say that Croatia has grown in popularity as a European tourist destination in the last few years, especially since it entered the European Union in 2013. Anyway, I’m about to give you a few reasons on why you absolutely need to book a flight to Croatia, pronto.
Top 5 Reasons to Visit Croatia
1. The Beaches
The beaches in Croatia really are something else, and might just be one of the best countries in the entire world where beach appeal is concerned. This lovely country’s 1,800km coast contains a combination of clear, turquoise waters, pebbled beaches, and out-of-this-world secret coves. So, for those of you reading this who can’t get enough of the beach when you go on holiday, keep in mind that you can’t go wrong with Croatia’s.
2. The Cuisine
The fantastic aspect of Croatia’s cuisine is that it really is a mixture of two. This holiday destination is perfect for those who love good quality, fresh seafood, yet still don’t mind a hearty plate of Central European food. However, if you’re staying somewhere on the coast (which, let’s face it, you probably will be) then you’ll be glad to know that there’ll be every type of seafood you can possibly imagine. After all, the variety of fish caught in the Adriatic Sea is limitless. A typical starter in Croatia is octopus salad, and whichever kind of fish you choose as your main course will almost always be grilled. Main meals tend to be eaten in a ‘restoran’ (a restaurant) or a ‘konoba’, which can be translated to ‘tavern’.
3. The History
If you’re a complete historical nerd (like me – cough), Croatia will definitely keep you entertained. Although each and every Croatian town/city has something historical to offer, I’d say the best place to go for this kind of thing would be Dubrovnik. Many of the country’s top historical sites are situated here, and the actual city itself is considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dubrovnik’s city walls are one of the best kept medieval structures in the whole world, and the city even has a Franciscan Monastery which dates all the way back to the early 14th Century. The cathedral in Dubrovnik was finished in 1713, and provides the perfect backdrop for a picture.
4. The Weather
One of the main reasons that so many people visit Croatia every year is because of its amazing climate. Not only are the winters blissfully mild, but the summers tend to last much longer than in other neighbouring countries. Therefore, this beautiful country can be visited all year round, depending on your preference of climate. However, central parts of Croatia like Slavonia and Zagreb, the capital, tend to have winters more on the cold and wet side. Keep this in mind!
5. The Prices
Okay, so Croatia’s sudden popularity in recent years has definitely contributed to it being more expensive than it used to be, but saying this, it’s still cheaper than a lot of Mediterranean holiday destinations. More popular areas of Croatia like Hvar and Dubrovnik have higher hotel prices, but throughout the country, transport, food and drink costs are reasonable. It’s the ideal place for those tourists who don’t want to splash lots of cash, but at the same time, aren’t on a super-tight budget.
