The Orangutan take their names from the Indonesian language. “Orang” meaning person and “utan” meaning person. So translated, the word Orangutan literally means person of the forest. Sadly, these gorgeous apes are now critically endangered.

Komodo Dragon

Clocking in as the biggest lizards in the world, the Komodo Dragon certainly lives up to it’s name. In case you’ve forgotten how monstrous these guys are, here’s a couple next a wild boar for comparison. Unfortunately, the Komodo Dragons have also found themselves facing extinction.

Green Peafowl (Pavo Muticus)

Commonly thought to be most beautiful bird native to Indonesia (and with good reason), these gorgeous birds are close relatives to the peasant.

Sumatran Tiger

The Sumatran Tiger has got be by far one of the coolest animals you’ll find in Indonesia. They’re also one of the most endangered. With only 350 left in the world, these big cats are also facing extinction, unless cared for and rehabilitated.

    Hi! I’m from Indonesia. I really LOVE nature, and Indonesia is beautiful. However, there may be a lot of pollution, especially in Jakarta (BEWARE OF POLLUTION!!!) Apparently I just wanted to point out that you forgot to put in the Cenderawasih bird. But overall, I really like this article!
