If you’re over boring house parties full of people in half-hearted attempts at Halloween costumes or staying home to watch old scary movies you’ve seen a million times before, why not up the chill factor this October 31st and stay at one of the top 3 most haunted hotels in the world? Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, the sightings and stories reported by previous guests at these lodgings is enough to send shivers down your spine.

Top 3 Most Haunted Hotels in the World

Karostas Prison Hotel in Latvia

The Karostas Prison Hotel in Latvia is the only prison hotel in the world, and the first of my top 3 most haunted hotels in the world. And as if being locked away and treated like a prisoner isn’t a chilling enough experience, many previous guests have reported ghostly sightings during their stays. In the 20th century, this hotel was used as a Soviet and Nazi military prison, where thousands of people were brutally murdered. The staff are always eager to pass on stories about the mysterious goings on to anyone brave enough to ask, from lightbulbs unscrewing themselves and smashing to the floor in the middle of the night to the pale ghost of a women wandering through the corridors who hanged herself in her cell decades ago.

Hotel Burchianti in Italy

Although it may look elegant and peaceful from the outside, Hotel Burchianti in Florence, Italy has a lot going on behind closed doors. If the stories are to be believed, this hotel has more ghosts floating through its halls than guests! People have reported seeing apparitions of children skipping and giggling down the empty halls, the ghost of an old woman sat alone knitting in a chair and the spirit of a deceased maid cleaning the rooms in the early hours. The Fresco Room, where Benito Mussolini once spent the night, is said to be the most haunted, with guests reporting the feeling of being watched and feeling an icy breath on their faces as they close their eyes to sleep.

If that sounds a bit too much for you to handle, there are plenty of other less haunted hotels in Florence.

The Russell Hotel in Australia

Not convinced by the previous two hotels? Then the Russell Hotel in Australia might just change your mind. Previously featured on the TV show Australia’s Most Haunted, this hotel offers ghost tour packages which you can join to hear recounts of the murders, hangings, suicides and ghost hauntings in the local area. But the unusual activity isn’t limited to the streets. Room eight at the Russell Hotel is said to be haunted by the ghost of a murdered sailor who stands at the end of the bed and watches guests as they sleep. Previous inhabitants of the haunted room have reported suddenly waking in the middle of the night and feeling heavy pressure on their chests, while the floorboards creak on their own and random flashes of light fire across the room.
