How Strict Is Vueling With Carry-On Size?

When it comes to flying, there’s a lot of planning to do. Before you start packing, you’ll want to consider the size of your luggage and whether you’re carrying it on or checking it.

All airlines have baggage allowances for their passengers, and if your luggage isn’t within those limits, you’ll either have to pay for it or leave it behind.

Vueling is strict with their carry-on size. Passengers are permitted one personal item measuring 16” x 8” x 11” (40 cm x 20 cm x 30 cm) that fits under the seat in front of them. An additional carry-on bag can be purchased if one isn’t included in your flight fare.

What are Vueling’s Carry-On Size Restrictions?

Vueling’s carry-on size restrictions depending on the type of ticket you purchased.

All passengers are entitled to one personal item that fits under the seat in front of them. These items can’t be larger than 16” x 8” x 11” (40 cm x 20 cm x 30 cm).

If you book Optima, Family, or TimeFlex fares, you can also take a larger cabin bag that fits in the overhead compartment.

These bags are restricted to 22” x 16” x 8” (55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm) and can’t weigh more than 22 lbs (10 kg).

Can You Take More Than One Carry-On Bag on Vueling?

You can take more than one carry-on bag on Vueling if your fare allows it or if you pay for it.

When you bring an extra bag that isn’t part of your baggage allowance, you have to check it.

Checking in a bag at the last minute is €30 (about $32) at the check-in desk.

If you manage to get your unauthorized bag through security, the gate crew will charge you €40 (~$42) to check it.

The prices go up if the bag is over 22 lbs (10kg) or larger than 22” x 16” x 8” (55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm).

You’ll also pay additional fees for oversized/overweight personal items or if you end up checking too many bags.

Can You Take an Extra Carry-On Bag on Vueling For a Fee?

You can only take an extra carry-on bag for a fee if you’ve booked a Basic Fare ticket. These reservations only allow personal items.

Upgrading your Basic Fare is likely the cheapest way to bring additional luggage on the plane, but you’ll have to confirm with Vueling which options are available to you.

Regardless of your ticket type, you are only permitted up to two pieces of hand luggage, and there is no option to bring more than that, even for a fee.

Any more than two pieces of hand luggage must be checked for an additional fee of €50-€60 (~$53-$63) or left behind.

What Happens if Your Carry-On Size Doesn’t Meet the Size Restrictions?

When your carry-on exceeds the size limits for a Vueling flight, you will have to check it (possibly at an additional fee).

If your personal item is over the size limits, you may have to pay between €30-€40 (~$32-$42) to check it.

If your carry-on bags are heavier than 22 lbs (10kg) or larger than 22” x 16” x 8” (55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm), you will be charged €50 (~$53) at the check-in desk or €59 (~$63) at the boarding gate.

You may not have time to remove any items from the bag before it’s taken to cargo, leaving you without your stuff for the flight.

So, if you’re planning to bring any hand luggage with you, make sure it’s the right size.

Does Vueling Have Size Restrictions for Checked Bags?

Unlike most other airlines, Vueling doesn’t have size restrictions on checked luggage – it has limits based on the ticket type, weight, and the number of bags.

Check luggage comes in four weight categories: 15 kg (33 lbs), 20 kg (44 lbs), 25 kg (55 lbs), and 30 kg (66 lbs). Passengers are only allowed to check one of each (up to a total of four bags).

If your bag exceeds the weight category you’ve purchased, you’ll be charged €12 (~$13) for each excess kilogram, up to a maximum of 32 kg (70 lbs) per bag.

A 25 kg (55 lbs) bag is included with the Optima and Family fares and is the only category of luggage you’re permitted to add at the airport. (You can still add checked baggage that weighs less, but you’ll be charged as if it was 25 kg).

The least expensive time to add checked luggage is at booking using the website or Vueling’s app.

Are Vueling’s Luggage Restrictions the Same as Other Airlines?

No, very few airlines have the same rules for luggage.

Vueling’s rules are more strict regarding the size and amount of hand luggage on the plane, but they’re slightly more flexible regarding the dimensions of checked baggage.

They also offer more weight categories for checked luggage, and their prices seem more reasonable than other airlines (when the bags are booked in advance).

Confirming each airline’s baggage allowance – and the size of your luggage – before packing for your trip is usually a smart idea.

Knowing the size requirements allows you to organize yourself accordingly and saves you from making expensive mistakes with oversized or overweight luggage.
