Insider’s Sydney Guide

You’ve seen all of the tourist guides, and you’ve read the latest ratings from fellow travellers. But there’s one thing that none of them can tell you about Sydney, and that’s an insider’s Sydney guide. There is a lot more to this city than meets the eye, with so many layers to delve through. Once you get to know it better, gems like these really rise to the surface.

Insider’s Sydney Guide

It’s a great idea to find accommodation closer to Newtown, as you will want to keep coming back here night after night. It’s a hip place which is popular with students from the nearby Sydney University, so expect a fun atmosphere. Sydney jazz finds its home here, as does one of the best cinemas in the city – the Dendy. The suburb is also known for great places to eat and drink, including pubs like the Websters and The Bank. It gets busy, so you might want to head down early – or if you’re used to city life, just enjoy it like normal!

Circular Quay

You will definitely want to spend some time admiring the scenery in Circular Quay, where plenty of cruise ships gather to pick up passengers. From here you get a great view of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge right next to each other, and this is the gateway which connects ferry visitors with the rest of the city. You will see a lot of action, so it’s fantastic for sitting back and watching the world go by, and there is plenty of live entertainment with buskers and street artists. There are also lots of open-air restaurants where you can get a bite to eat at any time of day. It’s one of the older parts of the city, but with a fascinating backdrop of modern skyscrapers.

Museum of Contemporary Art

Also located near to Circular Quay, this museum is a good spot to get your dose of local culture. It houses contemporary art from all around Australia as well as across the world, and you can always visit one of the temporary exhibitions which change regularly. You can see a collection of the art online, but it’s much better to visit them in the flesh and really see them for yourself. Don’t be surprised if you manage to lose hours wandering around the different areas of the galleries here. There’s also a shop on site so you can pick up a few souvenirs of your visit – art postcards are so much cooler than the craft kitsch you can pick up at most cheap souvenir shops.

Barangaroo Park

You should always seek out the parks and gardens of any city, as they can be truly unique places – a splash of green in the midst of busy urban life. Barangaroo Park has a particular appeal because it is a fantastic place from which to watch the New Year’s fireworks – plenty of people will be joining you if you decide to head over there. This area used to be an industrial site until it was transformed into the current reserve, with views over the harbour and plenty to admire in the landscaped park. There are rock pools, walking trails, picnic spots, and covers for you to relax in whenever you visit. It is also something of a cultural hub, with plenty of events going on year-round. Definitely a place you don’t want to miss in this Sydney Guide.
