When you think about visiting Washington, D.C., golf isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind. Those of us who like the sport though, find that the nation’s capital has its fair share of courses, many of which are playable all year-round. In Washington, D.C., proper alone, there are three18-hole courses to choose from. If you’re coming in from Washington Dulles Airport, you’re in the vicinity of at least five within a 15-minute drive. All of these DC golf courses allow public play and are within an hour’s drive of Washington.

East Potomac Golf – Blue Course

When it comes to DC golf, it’s hard to compete with East Potomac’s Blue Course. Incredible views of the Washington Monument on several holes, convenience to the Capital, and a relatively inexpensive green fee ($35 per person on weekends + $10 for a cart) makes this 18-hole, par 72 course a favorite among locals. The course can also challenge even the most experienced golfer. This is particularly true when strong gusts of wind come from the Potomac River. The only downside to this course is the irrigation. Due to its location, flooding typically occurs after heavy precipitation so make sure to check the website for weather updates.
Westfields Golf Club
Westfields Green
One of the jewels of DC golf sits approximately 30 miles west of Washington. Westfields Golf Club in Clifton, Virginia is a Fred Couples-designed course that boasts bent grass fairways and well-manicured greens. Westfields offers a golfing experience that is a step above others thanks to its absolutely gorgeous setting. The course was crafted from natural wetlands and which resulted in a course that is virtually free from city distractions. It’s also a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
The course offers five tee boxes with yardage ranging from 4,000-7,000 yards. The course is open all year weather permitting. Green fees range from $40-$89 per person and includes a cart rental and range balls.

This public course in Arundel County, Maryland provides golfers with a sampling of grand slam signature holes from various courses, including three from Augusta National. Renditions Golf is around a 40-minute rental car drive (without traffic) from downtown and offers a driving range plus chipping and pitching practice holes. Weekday green fees start at $45 per person and includes a cart. Weekend and holiday rate though begin at $79. Keep an eye for discounts though, which are generally available for same-day booking.
