With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, many couples might think a tropical vacation is too expensive or far away. Cancun is both closer to the States and more affordable than you might think. Before Cancun became known as the go-to spot for college kids on spring break, travelers of all types were enjoying the white sand and crystal clear water for decades as a Cancun romantic getaway. In fact, Cancun is one of the best beach destinations for couples year-round.
Cancun Romantic Getaway
The wild party scene has moved on since MTV stopped filming there years ago and unless you visit the clubs at night, you won’t even notice the difference between spring break and any other week during peak season. What hasn’t changed is the gorgeous weather, incredible beaches, delicious food, and abundance of fun activities.
1. Plan and Pack Appropriately
Although the weather is warm all year, Cancun’s hurricane season runs from June to November. It rains the most during these months, but you can also get the best deals on flights and hotels during this time.
Fortunately, most rain showers are mild and don’t last long. You’ll want to check the weather report before leaving, but you shouldn’t need anything more than a light jacket if there aren’t any active storms.
Don’t forget your sunscreen, especially if you have a favorite brand that’s less common. Sunscreen in tourist areas is marked up to ridiculous prices, because people often forget it and you’ll definitely need it.
2. Enjoy Lounging in Hotel Cabanas
One of my favorite things about Cancun is how most of the hotels have nice cabanas lined up near the beach and they’ll serve you food and drinks while you lounge. This is perfect for couples that want to chill out in the shade near the ocean.
If you visit Cancun during off-peak months (May-November) you shouldn’t have a problem finding an open cabana at any time during the day. However, during the peak season you might want to snag a cabana earlier in the day to make sure you get one. Some hotels will also let you reserve one.
3. Have Brunch on the Beach
Do you love brunch? (Who doesn’t?) Then you have to have brunch on or near the beach during your stay. A lot of the hotels and resorts have ocean-view dining, but if your hotel doesn’t, here are few places you should check out:
4. Watercraft Rentals
Cancun offers a variety of watercraft rentals — ranging from casual to adventurous. The most reputable company is Aquaworld, which offers everything you could imagine. I also noticed that YouTuber Rachel Talbott booked her rentals through Aquaworld during her Cancun trip. If you’re up for a new challenge, you might be interested in flyboarding, which allows you to hover over the ocean by strapping a jet stream below your feet. For those that prefer to stay on the water, riding waverunners or booking a deep sea fishing trip might be your thing.
5. Snorkeling in Paradise
Snorkeling in Cancun is an unforgettable experience. Between the crystal clear water and the beautiful wildlife, few places in the world offer a better snorkeling adventure. Plus, it’s a fun activity that couples can enjoy together! Fortunately for those that don’t consider themselves strong swimmers, you don’t need any swimming skills — snorkeling is done in calm water and participants are provided with life vests and flippers.
6. Visit Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres, which translates to Island of Women, is a beautiful island that sits about 11 miles away from the Cancun coast. Isla Mujeres is only 4 miles long and is one of the most popular tourist destinations around Cancun. You can take a ferry boat to the island, or book an all-inclusive day trip to Isla Mujeres that includes snorkeling and other activities. Isla Mujeres is known for its unique shops, restaurants, coral reefs, underwater museum, and high population of endangered sea turtles.
7. Adventures in the jungle
The beaches in Cancun are world-class, but that’s not all this destination has to offer travelers. Leading up to the city is a dense, tropical jungle with its own variety of adventures — from zip lining to ATV off-roading! When planning a jungle adventure, the first place to look is Selvatica. Their operations are extremely professional, family-friendly, and they even provide a shuttle to and from your hotel. They ensure safety at all times and have higher sanitation practices than I’ve ever seen at similar places.
8. Enjoy the Incredible Food
If there was one thing to keep you from lying on the beach all day it would be the incredible restaurants in Cancun. Even the places that aren’t very good by their standards are still awesome. Also, you’ll find the restaurants in Cancun to be very accommodating for couples! Servers are full of energy and love to joke around with you and take fun pictures for you with your camera or phone. Even though it’s hard to go wrong, here are a few places worth visiting:
What better time to dive into the local spirit than on a Cancun vacation? In Rachel Talbott’s video above, she and her husband did a tequila tasting at their resort which looked fun. Tequila can only be made in Mexico and it always seems to taste better when you’re at the source.
10. Exercise Outdoors
For the couples that can’t go a day without exercise — Cancun is your playground! You can walk or jog along the beach, go for a swim, and you’ll even find yoga groups that let you join them on the white sands. After all of that eating (and drinking) you might find yourself going home with more luggage than you started with — and not from the souvenirs! A little exercise each day will prevent that from happening.
11. Take in the Ocean Sunset
There’s nothing quite like watching the sun go down while enjoying the cool breeze and sound of crashing waves from the ocean. Vacations go by too quickly when you’re having fun, so it’s important to pause and take in the moment each day.
A romantic vacation to Cancun is sure to create memories that you’ll cherish for a lifetime and by following these tips, you’ll be able to make the most of your days in the lovely Cancun sun.
