The great markets of Sydney go beyond the fruit & veg, and fish markets. The iconic Sydney weekend markets cater right to those who know, understand, appreciate and enjoy the form of creative resourcefulness, rustic aesthete and prudence in thrifty living. Yes, it is like an art form and can be an outflow of the frugal lifestyle — and an underrated and overlooked one at that. With the accompaniment of live music, fresh food at hand and a low-key and chilled-out weekend vibe, you’re in for a real shopping treat.
We all want cheap flights to our travel destinations, so why blow it on retail when you can score unique finds like antique trinkets and fantastic bargains on pre-loved fashion and vintage finds? Keep your wallet happy, and check out some sweet shopping spots to keep your travels (and wardrobe!) frugal and funky.
Parked in the grounds of Glebe Public School opposite the row of cafes and little shops, Glebe Markets prides itself as being a diverse space with much style and character which will make your shopping experience memorable. There you will find stallholders from all over the globe selling items which affirms Glebe’s bohemian multicultural charm. Dig through bargain piles and browse through high quality vintage and second-hand clothing, or discover antique books from past centuries, vinyl collections and handcrafted goods such as soaps and leather journals. There is also a spacious grassy area just to relax, take a break with good shopping fuel from the row of international cuisines such as Hungarian rolls and hot Indian dishes and enjoy the live music.

With over 150 stalls, Paddington plays host to quality pre-loved vintage items which hits the mark. Situated along Oxford Street in the heart of Paddington, the Paddo Markets go over and beyond by hosting creative homegrown talent and artisan designers artwork, jewelry and clothing – going in line with the high-end fashion boutiques and super hip vibe which Paddington is known for. Sometimes just being in Paddington makes you feel cool. You may even find a fine piece pain au chocolat from a stall to enjoy.

Held every Saturday and Sunday, Rozelle Markets is full of vintage treasures. As well as fresh plants, this is a great market for pre-loved and antique shopping purists. With impressive collections of old-school accessories and clothing items thoughtfully collected, you can be sure to find serious bargains on second-hand items which people seek to sell — I’ve scored a pair of $5 laced up boots myself, $8 top-quality floral printed top which is still one of my favourites today, and a perfectly fine pair of H&M denim pants just for $2 (and this is there was no H&M in Australia!). The music is great, and you can spend a good chunk of time in the spacious lot of the public school. If you can’t get enough of second-hand shopping, there are a couple of thrift stores just opposite the road to keep you happy.
When: Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 4pm
Where: 663 Darling St, Rozelle NSW 2039
Just round the bend from Rozelle lies the Balmain Market which continues to please visitors since establishing itself as the third oldest market of Sydney. While subject to weather, Balmain Market offers trinkets from original designs, but it does not lay low on all the secondhand goodies you can find. Score a leather vintage shoulder bag or the sweetest hat you can find – there is much to browse alongside delicacies on offer. With a good number of stalls laying nicely on the old church grounds, Balmain Market is a great accompaniment to Rozelle Markets in the neighbouring suburb.
