Best Places in the World to Watch the Sunrise

Sleeping in is a guilty pleasure, but sometimes it is totally worth getting up at the crack of dawn so that you can watch the sun come up over the horizon. There is something magical about watching the sky light up and that big glowing ball of orange slowly appear.

Best Sunrises in the World

Some sunrises are more beautiful than others and there are some truly amazing vantage points around the world for watching the beginning of the day. Here are some of the best sunrises in the world.

On Top of a Volcano in Hawaii

Wake up early and check out the amazing sunrise from above the clouds while perched on top of a volcano in Haleakala National Park in Maui. There are tour buses that will pick up visitors at 3am and drop them off at the summit. If you want to, you can then take the thrilling 28 mile bike ride back down to sea level.

At the Temples of Angkor Wat, Cambodia

While my partner and I were in Siem Reap, Cambodia we got up at 3am and rode bikes to the main temple of Angkor Wat, the largest religious site in the world. This sprawling ancient ruin contains dozens of beautiful temples built by a king in the 12th century. Before the sun comes up a huge crowd is always gathered, cameras in hand. As the sun comes up over the temple each detail of its meticulously carved form is slowly illuminated – a truly breath taking experience.

On a Beach in Fiji

If you want to be one of the first people in the world to see the sun come up, head to Fiji which is right on the 180 longitude line. This laid back South Pacific island offers white-sand beaches, swaying palm trees and turquoise water – as well as welcoming and friendly people. After you watch the stunning sunrise on the beach with a cold fruit smoothie, you could spend your day snorkelling, scuba diving or swimming.

The Grand Canyon, Arizona

When the sun comes up over the Grand Canyon, you will be treated to a gorgeous array of colours in the limestone canyon walls as well as in the sky. Enjoy a dazzling show of gold, red, purple and pink as you gaze over this enormous natural wonder.

On a Safari in Zimbabwe

The best way to spot wildlife on the Zimbabwean plains is to get up as early as possible and start your game drive as the sun is coming up – animals are more active at dawn than in the heat of the afternoon. The sky glows orange and purple and the savannah grasses rustle in the breeze, whilst you see one of the best sunrises in the world. As you watch the sun come up and explore these African landscapes, keep your eyes peeled for lions stalking their prey and elephants walking in large herds.

These are just a few of the best sunrises in the world. These amazing views are absolutely worth getting up early for, so make sure you set your alarm!
