While steakhouses still have the culinary reign in North Texas, you’ll find that sweet shops are starting to catch up to the race. Here are a couple of the best places to get some Dallas homemade sweets. Forget the calories; you’re going to sweat it out in the Texas summer heat anyway.
Best of Dallas Homemade Sweets
Since we’re in the South, it’s impossible not to highlight a place that makes homemade pies. And in Dallas, the place to go is Emporium Pies. This locally owned specialty pie shop now has three locations in the Dallas area but the one in Oak Cliff remains a favorite. Apart from being the original spot, it’s also in the heart of the charming Bishop Arts District. Locally owned restaurants and art galleries surrounds this location, giving it a very relaxing ambiance. Try a classic pie like “The Drunken Nut,” filled with bourbon pecan on a shortbread crust or one of their seasonal offerings: Basic Beach, Cherry Bomb, and Mellow Yellow. If you’re like me, you won’t hesitate finishing not just one, but two slices of pie!
Pretty Tasty Cakes & Pastries
Owned and operated by Marcelina Olan, Pretty Tasty Cakes & Pastries serves cakes and pastries made from recipes passed down from multiple generations. You can purchase moist mini bundt cakes in a variety of flavors including strawberry, double chocolate chip, butter pecan cake, and sweet potato. Currently, Ms. Olan is taking advantage of the fresh summer peaches offering a cobbler that’s spiced to perfection. But the star of Pretty Tasty Cakes & Pastries would have to be its butter pecan “crack cookies”; the sweet, crunchy yet chewy cookies are simply addictive. You can find her and her baked good inside the Shed at the Dallas Farmers Market. Don’t miss your chance to visit so you can take home some of the best Dallas homemade sweets.
Bisous Bisous Pâtisserie
Perhaps you’re looking for something more continental? Look no further than Bisous Bisous Pâtisserie. Located in Dallas’ Uptown neighborhood, this boutique bakery specializes in French macaroons and made-to-order cakes. They offer a limited number of miniature items as well: scones, tarts and eclairs, just to name a few. In addition to being a patisserie, it also offers baking classes on select Saturdays for $80 per person. So if you really like what you had and want to replicate it at home, sign up for one. Or you can just have them delivered right at your doorstep.
