It’s Chinese New Year today and in the spirit of this very special occasion, you want to celebrate in style. In addition to wearing red, distributing those red envelopes, you’ve got a craving for Chinese food. Here in the District, really good Chinese food is difficult to find but there are a handful worthy of a trek, especially on an occasion as important as today’s. Start the engines of your rental car and practice your chopsticks skills and head towards the best Chinese restaurants around Washington, DC.
Best Chinese Restaurants Around Washington DC
Bob’s Shanghai 66
Most locals will attest that not only is Bob’s Shanghai 66 THE place to go for soup dumplings in the DC metro, it’s also one of the best Chinese restaurants around Washington. Located in Rockville, MD (DC-area’s unofficial Chinatown), Bob’s offer two types: the traditional pork and one with pork and crab. The difference between the two is subtle but I’d suggest order one of each if it’s your first time eating there. Other items worth trying include anything on their specials board or the bean and curd pork.

Panda Gourmet Inn
A true hole in the wall, Panda Gourmet Inn is not your typical Chinese restaurant. First, it’s a trek to get there. From downtown DC, it’s almost a 30-minute drive. Second, Panda Gourmet sits inside an old Days Inn located in far northeast DC. Honestly, it won’t be my first choice to celebrate Chinese New Year but it definitely deserves a spot in this list of best Chinese restaurants in Washington, DC because of one dish: mapo doufu. A delicacy from Chengdu contains soft tofu, a touch of ground pork, chili broad bean paste, fermented black beans, chili oil, garlic, green onions, and Szechuan peppercorn. If you like spicy, this is a sure winner. Other items worth trying include cumin beef burger and their hand-pulled noodles.

Peking Gourmet Inn
Most visitors to the capital have, at some point, likely heard of Peking Gourmet Inn. This Falls Church restaurant gained popularity thanks to both presidents Bush, who were rumored to favor the restaurant among the thousands around the District. The specialty here is duck, prepared and cooked Peking style. Servers carve the bird table side and serve it with cucumber, traditional pancake, spring onions and hoisin sauce.
