Christchurch went through an earthquake some years ago which left it somewhat in need of TLC, but if you can get past that, then it’s definitely a great place to visit. It’s a charming city near the ocean with a very popular beach known as Sumner Beach. It also has some highly interesting art installations, many of which honor the victims of the earthquake, and beautiful gardens. Visit in January and catch the World Buskers Festival. Also, the Canterbury Plains that surround Christchurch are worth appreciating, where you can appreciate horse races and some of the most adorable lambs.

People really like Auckland and it is for this reason that it may be too crowded for some. It is also considered to be an expensive place to live. What may help to even out the balance is the fact that Auckland is a lively city with people from many different countries, that has plenty of water activities to do. If you are going there for vacation; you will enjoy the mountain biking parks and famous sites to see, such as Sky Tower. Another highlight about Auckland is that Waiheke Island is only 30 minutes away by ferry, so you can hop on over for some great views and excellent wine.

It may be challenging to make a decision between the two; as they are both charming in their own unique ways. If you are looking for a more hopping and international city to vacation in; Auckland may be what you are looking for and will provide you with many interesting experiences, whereas Christchurch is a bit more quaint and peaceful.

Auckland has more of a big city vibe with many of its residents working in IT and related jobs, while Christchurch is rebuilding which gives it a fresher and more relaxing vibe.

Another thing to keep in mind when making the decision is what you may find nearby. If you are traveling in a campervan, then visiting nearby attractions will be easy. For example, you may find more thermal pools near Christchurch, whereas the wineries near Auckland are more of what you are after.

Some of the attractions near Auckland are:

Places to visit near Christchurch are:

  • Kaikoura
  • Waipara Valley
  • South Canterbury
  • Hammer Springs Thermal Pools

In the end, if it is too difficult to decide on Auckland or Christchurch, why not go on a road trip throughout all of New Zealand. The country is full of magical destinations that will blow your mind. From towering mountains to breathtaking coastlines, New Zealand is truly a natural wonderland.
