Algarve Portugal – A Perfect Summer Destination

The Algarve Portugal gets its popular name from “Al-Gharb” (Arabic for “The West”). Algarve is a well-known summer hot spot for millions each and every year. Not only do tourists return again and again to experience the constant sun and idyllic beaches, but also for the extra low prices, relaxed culture and welcoming locals.

Although the Algarve Portugal tends to appeal to mainly British, Irish and Dutch tourists, this southern region of Portugal is visited by tourists of many nationalities. It is common to come across Canadian and American visitors as well as many Brazilians and other Europeans, all of whom are there to do little else but to chill out and enjoy themselves. The Algarve Portugal is home to many beautiful towns, cities and resorts. If you’re planning on visiting the region but stuck on which part, here’s some information below on the best places that are sure to give you the holiday of a lifetime.

Algarve Portugal’s most popular hotspot

Albufeira is arguably the Algarve Portugal’s most popular tourist hot spot. It is situated about half an hour drive by car rental from the region’s airport of Faro, and is a fantastic option for friends, families and couples. The different areas of the city provide something for everyone. The Areias de Sao Joao area or “The Strip” as it is also known is the best place to stay if you’re coming to Albufeira to party. The Old Town is more suited for those who prefer a stroll on the beach and a real insight into Portuguese culture and cuisine. The resort is best known for being lively, eventful, notorious for its drinking culture but at the same time, extremely popular for families of all ages. Albufeira is one of the few places that really does appeal to those of all ages, interests, budgets and backgrounds!

The place to splash the cash

Unlike Albufeira, Vilamoura is the place to be if you are not travelling on a tight budget. This man-made tourist resort does not have a beach, but instead provides visitors with a stunning marina with views to die for. Surrounding the marina is a selection of shops, including footballer Cristiano Ronald’s CR7, which sells women’s clothes and accessories. There’s also a wide choice of luxurious restaurants with all kinds of cuisine, plus bars that are proud to serve the best cocktails in the region.

Vibrant, small & historical town

Lagos is a picturesque town a little further away from Faro Airport than the previous two, and is popular for the backpacker crowd. Surrounded by city walls that were built in the 16th century, this one-of-a-kind Algarvian paradise is full of history and culture available for all to explore. Although the town is quieter than the major resorts in the Algarve (like Albufeira), Lagos has a vibrant town center with lots going on in the day and night, not only in the summer months but in the winter, too. If you are the kind of holidaymaker who prefers to dive deep into the local culture and community spirit as opposed to the atmosphere of typical ‘British’ holiday resorts, Lagos is the perfect place for you.

Praia da Rocha

Laid-back nightlife, stunning beach and family friendly

Located in the West of the Algarve Portugal, Praia da Rocha is a lively and bustling tourist resort known for its laid-back nightlife, stunning beach and things to do for families. Conveniently, the resort is close to all of the Algarve’s major tourist attractions, including the water parks Slide & Splash and Aquashow, the famous Aquamarine and the city of Portimao. Heading to Portimao for the day is a fantastic idea if you’d like to get a taste of everyday city life in Portugal. Accessing the city is an easy and simple process, giving you the reassurance that you can spend a morning and early afternoon in the hustle and bustle of Portimao, but be back on the idyllic shores of Praia da Rocha come early evening.

Wherever in the Algarve Portugal you choose to spend your holiday, you are sure to have the best possible time without spending a small fortune. In early 2014, this stunning region of Southern Portugal was voted the cheapest place in Europe to spend a holiday, and is rated highly among first-time visitors and regulars alike. What are you waiting for? Head to the Algarve Portugal for your best summer getaway yet.
